Enjoyable Biking Adventuretour In Northern Laos – 13 Days

Day 1-THAILAND-LAOS PAKBENG
After breakfast, we cross the border into Laos. After immigration formalities in Laos, we get on the boat down the Mekong River, the longest river in Southeast Asia, the 7 longest in Asia and the 12 longest in the world, which flows from China along the Lao/Burma border, the Thai Lao border before turning east and running through the heart of Laos. The boatman prepares our lunch and we have in the boat. We visit the villages and see the countryside life style. Our journey takes around 7 – 8 hours look out for water buffalo and villagers doing their laundry as well as hundreds of smiling children enjoying the river. We finally arrive the small town of Pakbeng.

Day 2-PAKBENG-MUANGBENG
After having our breakfast we start riding from the hotel at 8:00 or 8:30 AM on the way we see mostly minority villages belonging to the Khmu tribe (up Lander), Hmong tribe (high Lander) and Lao (low Lander). the people of the mountains in the southern China that long ago migrated south and defined the civilizations of Thailand and Laos, they are divided into black Thai, red Thai and white Thai regarding to the color of their traditional dresses. After 52 km of riding we arrive to Muanghoun where we have lunch. After lunch we continue another 32 km to the village of Muangbeng and ends at Phonethong guesthouse after 7 or 8 hours riding that depending on how strong you are, we stay in a primitive guesthouse with share bath room and our dinner is prepared by the owner of the guesthouse.

Day 3.MUANGBENG-OUDOMXAI
Our breakfast today is prepared by our guide, after having breakfast we cycle to Oudomxai.we leave the guesthouse at 8:00 am, the first section of 39 km riding takes us up and downhill but short climb through numerous villages and lovely children wave their hands with smiling and say hello in Lao language SABAIDEE, it means HI or HELLO in English   it is very nice riding in the morning, at 39 km this is the start of the 4 km climb to the top, here we make decision for lunch, we can have in the shade under the tree or we continue riding another 20 km into the town and have lunch there that depending on how hungry you are. We stay in a nice guesthouse with private bathroom and 24 h electricity. Internet is available.

Day 4.OUDOMXAI-NONGKIAW
Today is the longest, hardesr but the best rides of the trip, we ride back the way we came into town, continuing along Route 13 north towards Luangprabang.after 5 km from guesthouse the road starts to wind upwards and we start the first of a series of long climbs through high mountains but scenery is perfect. We are in the land of the Hmong (high Lander) who are known as originally live in high elevation in northern Laos, in former time they lived by growing opium. After long climb, we rest on the first peak for water, snacks and seasonal fruits. Then we continue the next 30 km to the second and the third peak for lunch stop, after lunch it is down, down and down as we descend 30 km into the valley, this is a last downhill. At the end of the descent, we arrive at Pakmong, a village that marks the junction at where the road turns towards Luangprabang. From there it is another 30 km to our destination Nongkiaw on the Nam Ou River. This area used to be the base of the communist struggle during the wartime before 1975.we stay at the bungalows that locates by Nam Ou River and surrounded by high cliffs and mountains.

Day 5. BOAT trip / RIDE NONGKIAW – LUANGPRABANG
Today is easy day, after breakfast and enjoying the morning view we get on the boat, which will take us on another ride down river, this time along the scenic Nam Ou ,after about 4-5 h ( depending on water level ) we reach the point where the Nam Ou flows into the Mekong. After visit the famous holy cave of Pak Ou Known as Buddha caves, we cross back to Pak Ou village where we have lunch and meet our staff with all the bikes, after having lunch we start riding the last 30 km to Luangprabang .

Day 6.  LUANG PRABANG
For this day, I want you decide as following option:
Option 1: After having breakfast we cycle 30 km to water fall and have lunch there

Option 2: Haft day cycle around town to discover the small city of Luangprabang and visit the oldest temples in the town and cycle 5 km out of town to visit handicraft paper and the weaving village then come back to the town for lunch at nice restaurant by the Mekong River, after noon free

Option 3: Free.
There is plenty to do in Luangprabang. The town is a beautifully preserved and in 1995 it was added to UNESCO`s World heritage list. Most of the best temples of Lao/ French architecture are along Phothisalat road, which is where you will find the royal palace museum. You should also see Xiengthong temple, King Setthathirat built it in 1559 before moving the capital city of the land of million elephants from LuangPrabang to Vientiane.  Before1975 it considered to be the royal temple. In the after noon, you can climb Mount Phousi for great views of the town and sun set.

Ride: – Otion 1 = 30 km.- Option 2 = 12 km.

Day 7. LUANG PRABANG – KEWKACHAM
We ride out of town and join route 13 heading south.Today’s ride will take us up around 1000 meters in elevation and the climbs start almost as soon as we leave town .we ride out of the Mekong valley and into the mountains, following the Khan river. We pass many villages and stop for refreshments every 15 or 20 km. we will take the left folk staying on route 13, then start a series of tough climbs. After 15 km of climbing (1005 m above sea level), we are rewarded by a 14 km descent to Nam ming (350 m above sea level) where we will stop for lunch. After lunch, we have one last climb (20 km) into the mountains to Phou Dam before we drop down to Kew Kacham where our destination ( 1340 m above sea level ) . Accommodation is basic but dinner is good and there is plenty of Beer Lao.

Altitude: LuangPrabang = 270 m. Kewkacham = 1340 m
Ride: 82 km

Accommodation: Kewkacham guesthouse (primitive and share bath room, 24 h electricity)

Day 8. KEWKACHAM – KASI
Our guide will prepare breakfast. This area is the coldest place in our trip especially in the morning, as we ride along the mountain ridge for 20 km. At 22 km, we start our first climb of the day for 8 km. we stop for lunch at Phoukhoun, 46 km from our destination Kasi at an altitude of 1300 m. This is a big crossroads where route 7 goes to the plain of jars. We will continue down route 13 ,this 25 km descent is one of the best in southeast Asia, we will enjoy a most excellent after noon ride. we regroup at abridge across a small stream at 75 km. we then have a short climb before a flat ride into Kasi where we stay over nigh.

Altitude: Kewkacham = 1340 m. Kasi = 405 m
Ride: 94 km

Accommodation: Somchit guesthouse (good guesthouse with private bathroom and hot shower. 24 h electricity)

Day 9.KASI – VANGVIENG
We should be able to do today’s ride in a single morning leaving extra relaxation time in Vanvieng. We continue along route 13 and although there are some short climbs most of the ride is down hill or flat. The scenery is just beautiful and you should really enjoy stretching your legs. We will stop for refreshments a few times along the way, but we make a main stop after 50 km at a big village of Ban Phatang. The last 18 km is a fast flat ride among the spectacular limestone mountains. We will reach the hotel in time to enjoy lunch over looking the river. The afternoon is free to explore the town or take a swim in the river. Vangvieng has a lively traveler’s scene with all the usual accompanying facilities: e-mail, pubs, pizza and many young foreigners.

Altitude: Kasi = 405 m. Vangvieng = 280 m
Ride: 58 km

Accommodation: elephant crossing hotel.

Day 10. VANGVIENG – THALAT
We have a long ride today and the heat may be the factor so we will want to leave early. We continue along the route 13 and stop for refreshment every 20 or 25 km. The rest of the morning is along undulating roads to Hinherb village. After 69 km we reach a long bridge, we stop for lunch in a restaurant. The afternoon ride is along fast flat roads. After 83 km, we turn left at a main junction of Phonhong town. After 15 km of riding along the flat road and takes, us into the town of Thalat near the NamNgum dam. We stay in Napakuang resort and have dinner at our resort.

Altitude: Vangvieng = 280 m. Thalat 190 m
Ride: 100 km

Accommodation: Napakuang resort (good room)

Day 11.THALAT – VIENTIANE
We ride out of Thalat pass the NamNgum dam, we have one sharp hill in the morning then it is all fairly flat, we stop for lunch in a local restaurant when we feel like it. Riding today there are more traffic so please remember to keep riding on right side all the time and we regroup before getting into town and then we cycling to hotel. Dinner is at KuaLao restaurant.

Altitude: Thalat = 190 m. Vientiane = 180 m
Ride: 93 km
Meal: B / L /D
Accommodation: Chanthapanya hotel (good hotel)

Day 12.VIENTIANE
After breakfast, we cycle to discover the town visits the famous temples in town such as Vat Prakeo temple, Thatluang stupa and the other attractive site and end at morning market for those who want shopping or relaxing.

Day 13.DEPARTURE
En of service.
Packing instruction: When packing you should understand that your main luggage would not be accessible during the day so if you have items you want to use please put them in a smaller day pack which we will store in the van. This applies to every day including boat trips.

1. 1 English speaking Lao guide (cycling guide)
2. 1- 2 helper(s) that depending on the group size
3. 1 support truck for all luggage and bicycles
4. 1-2 mini buses depending on the group size.

SUPPORTED TEAM
We will be supported by air conditioned mini bus and truck that have been specially modified for cycle tours. The vehicles follow us the whole time and are always available for tired cyclists. It is very easy to get bikes on and off the truck, so you can rest when you are tired and cycle whenever you fell like it, and you will be well looked after, All of our staff has been trained to serve for cycling tour all support vehicles will follow around 100 – 150 m behind the last cyclist, when you cycle you feel free and incase of any problem for your bike you will be helped immediately, water stop is every 1-1:30 h or every 15-25 km depending on the road condition and the cyclists.

BIKE REPAIRS: Basic spares and tools are carried by the guide and on the support vehicles, incase of any problem you just stop. Though we cannot guarantee having spares for every conceivable problem. If bringing your own bike please make sure that it is fully serviced prior to the trip to ensure that nothing serious is about to break.

WEATHER: There are two seasons in Laos: from March to September is hot and raining with temperatures between 25-40 C. From October to February is winter with the temperatures between 10-25 C, it also depends on which part of the country, northern part is cooler than southern part. In winter season is the best time to travel in Laos and riding conditions are perfect.

VISAS: Visa can be obtained from Lao embassies and consulates abroad; in addition, visa can be obtained on arrival at international checkpoints and the cost for this is from 30-42 US$ in cash with a validity of 30 days(the cost of visa is different from every nationality )  and you will also need two passport photographs.

FOOD: Meals are included as per the itinerary where B= breakfast, L = lunch, D= dinner. Most meals are Lao food and it is very similar to Thai food. Any special dietary requirements can also be catered for as well. Please let us know at the time of booking.
Accommodation: In this tour, we will have three different classes accommodation, 6 nights in 3 star hotels, 4 nights in good quality guesthouses with private facilities including hot water, private bathrooms. 2 nights in primitive guesthouses.
